MINISTRY CERTIFICATION - WHAT IS IT, HOW DO I GET IT?
Ministry Certification with USCCB Approval is a designation of professional competence given to lay persons who serve in leadership positions for a parish or Church based ministry. Lay ecclesial ministers can apply for ministry certification by contacting the Director of one of the following: Catechesis (DREs) Evangelization, RCIA & Adult Faith Formation (Program Directors) Youth & Young Adult Ministry Lay Ministry (Pastoral Ministers & Pastoral Associates)
Parish proram leaders are eligible for Ministry Certification at the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels after they have completed academic studies in theology, fulfilled spiritual formation requirements and have served in a ministry leadership position for a minimum of one year.
Provisional Certification is given to ministers at level I after at least 8 hours of ministry training; Level II after completion of between 6 & 15 academic credits and participated in foundational workshops for spiritual formation.
Lansing is one of five Dioceses in the United States which certifies lay ministers with Approval of the USCCB Committee on Certification & Accreditation. This means that our formation program and procedures to review a minister's competence meet national standards that were developed by professional ministry groups and approved by the US Bishops
The Combined Ministries Certification Review Board, created in 2006, reviews ministry files for applicants and determines - on a case by case basis - whether or not to issue Basic, Intermediate or Advanced Certification to the applicant. Certifications are granted in the specialized areas of Catechetical Leader, Pastoral Associate, Pastoral Minister, Pastoral Coordinator and Youth Ministry Leader.
The diocese also provides provisional certification for ministers authorized to serve in public ecclesial positions who are working on aquiring ministry formation credentials. Lay ecclesial ministers at all levels of experience can apply for ministry certification by contacting the director of one of the the following Diocesan Offices: *Catechesis (DREs & RE Section Heads) *Evangelization, RCIA & Adult Faith Formation *Youth & Young Adult Ministry.
